Metamorphosis – Change and Continuity in Indian Contemporary Art

Indian Contemporary Art Debuts in Cincinnati
Metamorphosis Evolves into a Citywide Event

Friday, April 17, 2009 5-8pm

We are pleased to announce Metamorphosis – Change and Continuity in Indian Contemporary Art. This collaborative exhibit between the ArtWorks Gallery, Phyllis Weston-Annie Bolling Gallery, PAC Gallery, and the Krohn Conservatory is planned in conjunction with Butterflies of India, the annual butterfly show at the Krohn Conservatory. The series of events focused on Indian Culture will tantalize the senses and invigorate the arts community.

Curated by Radha Chandrashekaran and Meena Vari, Metamorphosis – Change and Continuity in Indian Contemporary Art features fourteen established and emerging Indian Contemporary artists such as Vivek Vilasini, George Martin, and Murali Cheeroth who are widely recognized as some of India’s leading Contemporary artists. Each considers dramatic shifts in the economy and society and tempers them with a profound understanding of culture and history. Photographs and works on canvas explore the present age of intense globalization by combining major Western art movements with India’s own vast array of cultures, traditions, and artistic expressions. A second body of work in the exhibition features Patuan Artists from West Bengal, India who create works of art using raw materials and the tradition of storytelling.

A truly citywide cultural event, the two and a half month event promises to be the largest and most original of its kind in the Midwestern United States. During April, May, and June, Cincinnati will become the region’s premier location to take part in an international exchange between eastern and western cultures.
